RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – A Mason City man died in rural Cerro Gordo county auto crash.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a crash occurred just north of Sheffield, Iowa, on Monday, February 22, 2021. At about 5:40 AM that morning, two vehicles were approaching each other on Highway 65. The driver of a 2008 Mercury Milan, 21-year-old Exiquio Martinez of Hampton, Iowa, was northbound when, due to slippery road conditions, he lost control of his vehicle and slid sideways over the road’s center line. The Milan then struck a southbound 1993 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by 61-year-old Timothy Wilmarth of Mason City.
As a result of the collision, Wilmarth was killed. Exiquio Martinez was injured as were his passengers, 23-year old Mayra Perez and 25-year old Alvaro Almonte, all also of Hampton.
The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate.
