Trump signs Coronavirus relief and omnibus funding bill

MAR-A-LAGO, FLORIDA – Donald Trump on Sunday signed into law a Coronavirus relief and omnibus funding bill that was handed to him days ago.

The White House press secretary confirmed that on Sunday, December 27, 2020, the President signed into law: H.R. 133, an Act making consolidated appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2021, providing coronavirus emergency response and relief, and for other purposes.

The bill Trump signed is loaded with billions of dollars for foreign nations, including funding Trump had requested in his own budget he submitted earlier in 2020. Examples include over a billion dollars for Egypt’s military and Israel. Trump also sought over $40 million for the Kennedy Center.   Both Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate supported this bill, as it had been passed in Congress early last week.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the President signed the bipartisan coronavirus relief and omnibus funding bill:

“The signing of the bipartisan, bicameral coronavirus relief legislation is welcome news for the fourteen million Americans who just lost the lifeline of unemployment benefits on Christmas Weekend, and for the millions more struggling to stay afloat during this historic pandemic and economic crisis.

“This relief legislation is a down payment on what is needed to crush the virus, put money in the pockets of the American people and honor our heroes – our health care workers, first responders, transit and sanitation workers and teachers.  We need to ensure robust support for state and local government to distribute and administer a vaccine, keep workers employed and prevent devastating service cuts – and we must do so as soon as possible.

“Now, the President must immediately call on Congressional Republicans to end their obstruction and to join him and Democrats in support of our stand-alone legislation to increase direct payment checks to $2,000, which will be brought to the Floor tomorrow.  Every Republican vote against this bill is a vote to deny the financial hardship that families face and to deny the American people the relief they need.”

The bill will give Americans a $600 stimulus check, unemployment extensions and other remedies for the ongoing pandemic crisis.
