Iowa man struck and killed by motorist during damage inspection from deer collision

JACKSON COUNTY, IOWA – An Iowa man was killed by a motorist after the car he was riding in struck a deer and he got out of the vehicle to inspect the damage.

The accident occurred on Friday evening, October 30, 2020 at about 6:56 PM in Jackson county. A 2016 Volkswagon Jetta driven by 19-year-old Paige Cupps of Dubuque was southbound on Highway 62 when a deer entered the road and was struck by the Jetta, which became disable and stopped in the northbound lane. A passenger in the Jetta, 23-year-old Matthew Bowling of Maquoketa, Iowa, left the vehicle to inspect the damage when he was struck by a north bound 2016 Chrysler 200 driven by 63-year-old Marjorie Hendrickson of Andrew, Iowa.

Bowling was thrown into the ditch and died as a result of the collision.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Jackson county sheriff’s office, Andrew Fire and Maquoketa Ambulance.
