Young boy goes missing in rural Mason City but found safe after tracked by police dog and drone

RURAL MASON CITY – A young boy went missing in rural Mason City but was found safe after being tracked by a police dog and drone.

The incident took place on October 20, 2020 at 11:33 AM, when the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a 2-year-old boy and his dog missing in the 19000 mile of 220th Street of rural Mason City. Responding deputies assisted family members searching the house and buildings on the acreage. The Sheriff’s Office called for the Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management’s drone, Mason City Police K-9 and Worth County K-9.

Mason City Police K-9 were first on the scene. Officer Duane Kemna and K-9 Kilo started a track. They tracked the child along a creek and through several acres of timber a distance of .6 of a mile. He was found in the NW corner of a neighbor’s house sitting on a cinder block with the dog at his side. He had removed his wet socks, shoes and coat.

The sheriff’s office says “the family is thankful to law enforcement for the safe recovery of the 2-year-old boy and his dog. Medical attention was not requested.”

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management, Mason City Police Department, and Worth County Sheriff’s Office.
