Second Presidential debate to feature mute button

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – An obvious solution to usher in a shred of dignity and coherence to the next Presidential debate – a mute button – will be employed Thursday when Joe Biden and Donald Trump debate a second time.

The Commission on Presidential Debates issued a statement this week, saying, “Under the agreed upon debate rules, each candidate is to have two minutes of uninterrupted time to make remarks at the beginning of each 15 minute segment of the debate. These remarks are to be followed by a period of open discussion. Both campaigns this week again reaffirmed their agreement to the two-minute, uninterrupted rule. The Commission is announcing today that in order to enforce this agreed upon rule, the only candidate whose microphone will be open during these two-minute periods is the candidate who has the floor under the rules. For the balance of each segment, which by design is intended to be dedicated to open discussion, both candidates’ microphones will be open.”

After the earlier debacle of a debate which was more of a shouting match, the Commission said the “debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues. The CPD will be carefully considering the changes that it will adopt and will announce those measures shortly. The Commission is grateful to Chris Wallace for the professionalism and skill he brought to last night’s debate and intends to ensure that additional tools to maintain order are in place for the remaining debates.”

The next Presidential Debate will be held Thursday, Oct. 22 in Nashville, Tennessee. Kristen Welker, moderator, has selected the topics for that debate. Subject to possible changes because of news developments, the topics are as follows, not necessarily to be brought up in this order:

Fighting COVID-19
American Families
Race in America
Climate Change
National Security
Leadership

The debate will be held on Thursday, October 22 at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. The debate will start at 9:00 p.m. ET and run for 90 minutes without commercial interruption.
