AMES – Ames police have arrested a suspect in violent domestic assault and kidnapping investigation.
On September 14, 2020, at 6:45 PM, the Ames Police Department responded to a 911 call of a domestic assault in the 3100 block of Grove Avenue. Responding officers located a female victim in the area. The victim stated she had escaped from an apartment after being held against her will and assaulted several times throughout the day by her boyfriend, Derrick A. Belton, age 36, of Ames. The victim stated Belton also threatened to kill her on several occasions. The victim was transported by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center and later released.
Officers contacted Belton through the apartment door. Belton refused to exit the apartment or cooperate with officers. An Ames Police crisis negotiator spoke with Belton on the phone throughout the evening and into the early morning hours. Belton continued to refuse to exit the apartment.
At 1:03 AM, officers entered the apartment and arrested Belton without incident.
Belton is charged with the following crimes:
• Kidnapping 3rd degree, a class “C” felony
• Domestic Abuse Assault- Impeding Flow of Air, an aggravated misdemeanor
• Harassment 1st degree, an aggravated misdemeanor
