USDA to temporarily provide free breakfast and lunch for all Mason City youth

Hoover school in Mason City

MASON CITY – Beginning Monday, September 14, Mason City will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that the USDA recently extended. This program is scheduled to run until December 31 or until funds run out.

At this point, no one really knows when this funding may run out, so as with everything related to COVID, it will be a fluid process and the district will notify families as soon as possible of any changes.

At this time, beginning Monday, September 14, this means:

• All Mason City youth ages 18 and under will be eligible for free meals (breakfast and lunch).
• The District will continue to service its students attending on-site at all of the buildings. This will now be provided through the SFSP until December 31 or until funds run out.
• Grab and go meal locations are Hoover Elementary (1123 8th St. NW), Harding Elementary 1239

N. Rhode Island Ave.), and Roosevelt Elementary (313 15th St. SE). Pick up will be near the front doors of the building from 11-11:30 a.m., Monday thru Friday, based on the school calendar.

Additional considerations:
 If a student has a special diet requirement and plans to participate in the SFSP grab and go

meals, please contact Supervisor of Food Services Sarah Mariner at 641-421-4501 or

samariner@masoncityschools.org.
 All pre-ordered grab and go lunch production will be paused during the participation in the

extended Summer Food Service Program. Families will have to go to a grab and go location to pick up meals.

When funds for the SFSP run out, the district will return to the National School Breakfast and Lunch programs and students/families will be charged according to their eligibility.

Please remember, the district is asking our families and the community to wear a mask when picking up meals to help keep our staff and our community safe and healthy.

Free breakfast??? Somebody, somewhere has to pay for it. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
