Man holding knife to child’s throat shot dead by Iowa law enforcement

BETTENDORF – A man holding a knife to a child’s throat and threatening others was shot dead by Iowa law enforcement Thursday.

On September 3, 2020 at 11:53 AM, Scott county, Iowa Emergency Communications Center  dispatched Bettendorf police officers to 1111 — 16 1/2 Street, Bettendorf regarding somebody bleeding and a subject holding a knife to the throat of a 4-year-old child. Multiple police officers responded to the residence at which point police announced their presence and made entry. Upon entry into the house, an officer engaged an adult male holding a sharp edged weapon, putting others in imminent danger. There were multiple young children present when this occurred. A Bettendorf officer discharged his weapon at the subject and subsequently, the subject was struck once and was pronounced dead at the scene. The subject is a Caucasian male, age 53. His name is not being released at this time pending notification of family.

No officers or citizens were injured during the incident. There is no threat to the general public.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was contacted and the investigation has been turned over to them. They will be interviewing witnesses, collecting any and all video and audio recordings, and processing the scene.

As per departmental policy the officer has been placed on administrative leave and his name will not be released until he has been formally interviewed by the Iowa DCI.
