High School Football: Mason City’s undefeated season stopped cold by Covid-19

MASON CITY – For once, in a long time, it is not another football team dealing a blow to the Mason City Mohawks, it is Covid-19 this time, as its season is suspended due to exposure by coaches to the dreaded virus.

Mason City was due to play Fort Dodge this Friday in a home contest, and the two rivals have battled on the gridiron every year since 1923, but this year, the game is cancelled. It was announced that some football coaches for the Mohawks have been exposed to Covid-19 and therefore, this weeks game and next week’s against Gilbert are cancelled.

In Tuesday’s announcement, the Mason City School District said (1) All coaches exposed are following quarantine protocols set by public health; (2) To our knowledge no varsity players exposed; (3) Important for players to continue to monitor their health daily; (4) Football questions should be directed to coaches; and (5) COVID related questions should be directed to the Superintendent’s office – 641-450-5001.

Mason City is 1-0 on the season and rolling along after dismantling the hapless Marshalltown Bobcats last week, 28-0.
