Deceased Fort Dodge woman and officer who fired gun at her identified

DES MOINES – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has identified the subjects involved in the officer-involved shooting on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, in Fort Dodge.

Melissa Halda, 39, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was identified as the deceased subject. An autopsy was completed on Halda by the Iowa Officer of the State Medical Examiner.

Webster County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, Brett Knippel, has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation per Webster County policy.

Earlier in the week, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a 911 call from a resident in the 1500 block of 20th Avenue South in Fort Dodge reporting that a female was armed with large knives and was acting erratically. Halda was shot and killed in the ensuing confrontation.
