DAVENPORT – An Iowa man was shot dead at a funeral home this weekend, leading cops to chase and arrest a suspect.
On Saturday, August 1st, 2020 at approximately 11:30 AM, the Scott County Emergency Communication Center started receiving 9-1-1 calls reporting a disturbance at Weert’s Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road in Davenport, Iowa. Callers reported a man in the lot with a handgun, and a person having been shot. Callers provided a vehicle description for the suspect as he fled the scene. The shooting victim was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. An officer responding to the call observed the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. The vehicle fled from the officer, reaching high speeds through residential areas, and the officer lost sight of the vehicle after several blocks.
The shooting victim, 26 year-old Jeremy Shorter of Davenport, died at the hospital from his wounds.
The investigation of this incident led officers to 24 year-old Nuemonei Laster. At approximately 1:55 PM, Laster was located in the area of 800 W. 15th Street and fled from officers. Laster was taken into custody after a foot pursuit and was charged with; Murder in the 1st Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Eluding, and Interference with Official Acts with a Weapon.
Detectives are actively investigating this incident, no further information is available at this time.
