Tractor left unattended rolls onto Clear Lake beach, strikes and kills woman

CLEAR LAKE – A tractor left unattended rolled onto Clear Lake beach and struck and killed a woman Wednesday afternoon.

On July 28, 2020 the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office responded to a medical call at Clear Lake State Park Beach Area located at 6490 South Shore Drive in Clear Lake. An unattended tractor owned by the State of Iowa, rolled down a hill towards the beach area and struck a female who had been sitting near the beach. The female died at the scene due to the injuries from the accident. This incident remains under investigation.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Mercedes Kohlhardt of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office was assisted by the Department of Natural Resources, Clear Lake Fire and Rescue and Mercy Air Med.

My God. Of all the things we must worry about. A DNR tractor killing someone on a beach?

A real tragedy. Safety rules are written in blood. State of Iowa will probably come out with a rule all unattended vehicles need to have wheels chocked.

Nightmare for her poor family.

Seems to me that there’s a drop-off where the grass meets the beach. She must have been the only one there, as nobody saw the tractor rolling down the hill. Sad…
