Fareway to cease accepting cans and bottles for redemption at its Iowa stores

Fareway store in Mason City

BOONE, IOWA – Fareway has announced it will cease accepting cans and bottles for redemption at its Iowa stores.

According to Reynolds W. Cramer, President & CEO, Fareway Stores, Inc.:

Effective with the expiration of the Iowa Governor’s Emergency Declaration on July 25th, Fareway will not be accepting containers for redemption in its Iowa stores. Health authorities continue to advise that COVID-19 and other viruses are transmitted through respiratory droplets. Accepting potentially contaminated containers inside our stores presents a great risk of harm to the health and safety of our employees and customers.

In addition, Iowa law requires grocery stores to meet health and food safety guidelines for all employees and customers. Allowing used containers to be returned in our stores puts our employees and customers at risk, and runs counterproductive to the many safety and sanitation initiatives we have implemented in order to keep people safe.

Each store has posted a notice listing nearby redemption centers, where customers may redeem bottles and cans. We encourage local communities to focus their redemption on supporting these businesses and/or area non-profits that provide outside collection bins for donation.

At its core, our actions in rejecting container redemption inside our stores is to minimize potential harm to the communities we serve, while offering our customers alternative redemption options.

Democrats make no sense

25 cents makes sense

The state needs to add a deposit for all the water (flavored waters, too) plastic bottles and all energy drinks. I find it odd that the energy drinks that are supposed to give one energy, yet, once drank, they can’t seem to find the energy to throw the empties in trash receptacles.

Faraway has been fighting this law for several years. It is a smelly mess for such a place.

Th we Big Red Machine !!! Pete Rose, Johnny Bench etc……

As a kid I could find 10 cans and get a bottle of pop 25 cents, pack of baseball cards 15 cents and some candy !!!! Yahoo 4 me !!!

The can is worth more than the shit inside !!!!

The reason they don’t increase the amount is the soda lobby is blocking the increase

Yep, it’s been 5 cents for over 50 years !!!!

They need to increase the amount to 25 cents per can !! Then I would turn them in instead tossing them in the garbage

If Fareway wont accept the cans will they stop charging me the five cents when I buy a product that deposit is required?

Donate them! Quit your crying and bitching!

Maybe they want their money back

…I save myself time and a big headache…take my cans to the “metals” buyers, get paid for the aluminum and I am out the door a happy camper!!!

This is illegal. By law, if they collect the deposit then they must accept the returned cans.

It’s got nothing to do with covid 19. They just don’t want to deal with it.

Damn Democrats. Why do they want to do this to our country?

Hahaha! LMFAO! Why don’t you blame Obama? Idiot, Dumb ass!

I think it’s very interesting. Grociers use beverage specials as a tool to get people into the stores. But after it is bought and consumed they don’t want to have to deal with the empties.

This bottled – bill sure turned out good for ?

who gets the deposit they collect?

The distributors get the money and they are cashing in big time right now. Coke, Pepsi, Miller and Budweiser. They should be forced to redeem their cans.

There is no place to take them in Mason City. Iowa law states that if you sell it you have to redeem it unless there is a redemption center licence by the state. There is none in Mason City, I am going to write to Sharon Steckman and Amanda Regan about this.

I got crickets from Amanda Regan and Sharon Steckman. Doesn’t surprise me.

Covid cans my ass. Lazy or in their case sloth.
