Iowa Governor Reynolds orders flags at half-staff in honor of U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who passed away Friday

U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia

DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff immediately and remain at half-staff through sunrise Monday, July 20, 2020 in honor and remembrance of U.S. Representative John Lewis, a congressman from Atlanta, Georgia and longtime civil rights icon.

“From a bridge in Selma, Alabama to the halls of Congress, John Lewis was a trailblazer for justice and equality,” said Gov. Reynolds. “A giant in the Civil Rights Movement, Rep. Lewis always sought liberty and justice for all Americans. Today we come together to reflect on this remarkable life of service and remember that the fight continues to form a more perfect union for all.”

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.

Lewis with Joe Biden, released with Biden statement

As of Saturday morning, many politicians and famous people expressed their remorse at the passing of John Lewis.  Presidential candidate Joe Biden released a long statement, saying in part, “John was that hero for so many people of every race and station, including us.”

President Donald Trump tweeted and retweeted numerous statements since Lewis’ death, but none of them centered on the late Congressman.

Believe nothing. Just because a wise man said it, or you read it in a book…words of divine order, or because your mother told you… it doesn’t make it true. Believe only what you yourself can test and judge to be true.

You see, one day, I spent a whole day in this school without a single person looking at me or talking to me and I realized that was the best day I’d had in a long time. The day that nobody noticed me at all. The day I stopped being there. That was the best day. Well, that was kind of depressing, so I went home and took an anti-depressant. And then, I took another one. And then, for fun, I took twelve more. My mom and the doctors called it an accident. And then two weeks later, when I got back to school, nobody noticed. It was like I never left. I guess that’s the upside to not being there in the first place, right? Nobody misses you when you’re gone.

Forgiveness is never easy. Bitterness is easy. Hatred is easy. But forgiveness, that’s a tough one. Sometimes, people say things they don’t mean or do things they can’t take back. Sometimes we do things we can’t take back. So we feed ourselves to starve the pain.

RIP in Piece Kunta Kinte

Probably not a bad guy -But he had ATD and voted for the Trump impeachment so I will leave at that.

He did more for the Civil Rights Movement than almost any other person on this earth. He will be missed.

Racist S.O.B.

Yes, you are. Lewis was a champion. You apparently don’t know anything about him other than he was a Black man.

Whatever color he was, Lewis only represented his Black constituents. So, you think that makes him a champion?

He represented Americans. He was a champion.

Trump’s Trash and deserved everything he got.

He is still an impeached president and a jerk.

John Lewis would of been a better president.

Duh.
