Candidate for Iowa’s U.S. House District 4, J.D. Scholten, announces fundraising record for Quarter 2

SIOUX CITY — J.D. Scholten, candidate for Iowa’s 4th congressional district, announced today that he raised over $620,000 in the second quarter, including $349,000 since the primary, marking the best 2nd quarter fundraising record of any Democrat in Iowa’s 4th district history. The campaign has a total of $1.05 million in cash on hand. The campaign also announced that its army of volunteers have made over 84,000 calls and nearly 10,000 texts. The Scholten campaign says that “even with Steve King’s defeat, in large part due to the fundraising and volunteer strength of J.D.’s campaign, our campaign is pushing forward and gaining momentum every day proving that our grassroots supporters and volunteers are ready to take on any opponent.”

Scholten faces state Senator Randy Feenstra, a Republican who is a strong follower and supporter of Donald Trump.  Some political analysts say Feenstra is very much like Steve King in ideology, just in a younger and slicker package.

Building off this momentum, J.D.’s campaign is rolling out a tv and digital ad tomorrow to share J.D.’s message of believing in an Iowa that lifts each other up and fighting for the farmers, workers, and small businesses owners who power this district. Watch the new ad here.

J.D. Scholten said: “Our grassroots, people-powered campaign has proven that we’re not just about Steve King or even myself. This is much bigger than any one person — together, we’re building a 21st century vision for this district centered around resilient agriculture and revitalized rural communities, where everyday folks can get by and get ahead. At this turning point in Iowa, it’s never been more important to stand up to concentrated corporate power that sucks the wealth, power, and opportunities out of our communities. When you love your country, you fight for the people who make it work: the nurses, the truck drivers, the farmers, the teachers. Our movement is built on them and their families. While career politicians continue pushing for tax breaks to the super wealthy and huge corporations, we’re focused on fighting for Iowans.”

Next month, J.D. will be getting out directly to the people of Iowa’s 4th district to share his vision for rural Iowa. Following health and safety guidelines including wearing a mask and hosting socially distant, outdoor events, J.D. will drive his Winnebago RV, Sioux City Sue, to all 375 towns in Iowa’s 4th district. More details of the tour will be announced in the coming weeks.

Background: Born in Ames and raised in Sioux City, J.D. Scholten is a 5th generation Iowan. J.D. served as the 2018 Democratic nominee against Rep. Steve King in Iowa’s 4th District, earning nationwide recognition for his people-powered grassroots campaign that fell just 3 points short in a district that Donald Trump won by 27 points in 2016. He played baseball at Morningside College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After college, he pursued a professional baseball career and pitched in 7 different countries. He then worked as a paralegal, specializing in Intellectual Property and trials law, but found his true passion in helping others through pro-bono cases. He later launched his congressional campaign and continues to be a powerful voice for rural, working, and underserved communities in Iowa.
