MASON CITY – In the last month, COVID-19 cases are drastically increasing in Cerro Gordo County and the north Iowa area. The first lab-confirmed positive case in Cerro Gordo County was recorded on March 20th, 2020. Through mid-June, the state mandated a partial shutdown and people stayed home. As North Iowans, we collectively practiced preventative measures and were able to flatten the curve over a 3-month period.
“Now that businesses are open and people are gathering, we need your help more than ever,” states Brian Hanft, Director of Public Health. As of this writing, Cerro Gordo County has had 249 additional positive cases in July. This increase in cases is not the result of an outbreak and does not come from a single source. This rise in numbers is attributed to community spread. Additionally, between July 8th and July 15th, there have been 8 more deaths, with 1 occurring within the 61-80 year age range and 7 in the 80+ age range. “These deaths are heartbreaking and such a loss to our community,” says Hanft.
We are asking you to help us:
- Limit your time in public settings
- Wear a mask or cloth facial covering whenever you are in a public setting
- Practice social distancing whenever possible
- Frequently wash your hands or use hand sanitizer
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow
- Monitor your health and the health of your family multiple times a day
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily
If you have symptoms that prompt you to get tested for COVID-19:
- Stay home and quarantine until you receive a negative result
- If you receive a negative result and become symptomatic consider retesting, and isolate from others
- If you receive a positive result, isolate yourself from others
- Only come out of isolation if it has been 3 days with no fever, respiratory symptoms have improved, and it has been 10 days since symptoms first appeared
“Our employees are working around the clock to provide input to facilities, event planners, businesses and restaurants, we are conducting COVID-19 case contacts and contact tracing, but we can only do so much” says Hanft. “We need your help to stop the spread of COVID-19 and prevent more deaths.”

If people don’t wear masks then the virus will spread like wildfire. Gee, the daily updates on KIMT show coronavirus numbers by county. People in my county don’t seem to want to wear masks and we went from 8 to 58 in two weeks. I don’t care if you don’t care if you catch the virus or not but I don’t want it.
Masks protect others, if you don’t give a crap about protecting others it’ll show by the numbers going up. If you don’t want to educate yourself on why masks are important then stop promoting the lie that masks don’t help. Don’t lie and say there is a vaccine when there is not, therefore your lie about what’s in “it” are proven to be a lie.
