Trailing in latest poll to Theresa Greenfield, Joni Ernst calls for 6 debates

Joni Ernst (R) incumbent wants to debate her challenger

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joni Ernst noticed she is trailing in the latest poll to Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield and now is calling for six debates with her rival.

“I called for six debates on the serious issues facing Iowans, and national democrats respond by talking about my wardrobe,” Joni Ernst lamented Monday.

Ernst, dressed in a leather vest in a video posted Monday as she perched behind a motorcycle, said, “I haven’t heard say one thing that Chuck Schumer hasn’t told her to say. And, that’s not what Iowans expect in a leader,” as she demanded the face-off with Greenfield.

Theresa Greenfield is the Democratic nominee who will face Joni Ernst in November.

A Des Moines Register poll released just days before the Ernst debate demand has Greenfield ahead 46-43, within the margin of error.

Greenfield, a Des Moines real estate professional, didn’t immediately respond to Ernst’s challenge.  Instead, she criticized Ernst’s voting record in Congress, saying, “The fossil fuel lobbyist who runs the EPA – who Joni Ernst voted for – is considering 52 more waivers that devastate farmers & ethanol jobs. I’m calling on Andrew Wheeler to step down immediately. He’s failing our farmers & it’s shameful Sen. Ernst puts big oil ahead of Iowans.”

Ernst reportedly had only three debates in 2014 against her opponent, Bruce Braley.

The election is set for November 3, 2020.

Later Tuesday, the Greenfield campaign reached the NIT newsroom and requested an update to this story to include the Greenfield response to Ernst’s challenge:

“After a new poll showing her trailing, Senator Ernst continues to follow Mitch McConnell’s desperate playbook for other failing Senators around the country,” said Greenfield for Iowa Communications Director Sam Newton. “Of course, Theresa looks forward to debates this fall – just like how she participated in three televised debates and six public forums in the primary. While we’re currently accepting invitations from media partners, Ernst doesn’t need to wait to explain why she is enabling the anti-ACA lawsuit that would dismantle Medicaid expansion or refuses to answer for her ongoing dark money scandal.”
