Health department director to travelers: “Self-isolate now”

Hanft

MASON CITY – Cerro Gordo county’s health department director, Brian Hanft, says travelers should self-isolate in a statement released this morning:

Tuesday, 3/31/2020

One of the most frequently asked questions we’re receiving lately in the COVID-19 Call Center is from those who have recently traveled and wondering if they should self-isolate. The answer is yes! If you could, please help me share this message far and wide. It is highly recommended that Iowans self-isolate for 14 days in the following situations:

  • If you have traveled outside of Iowa for business or vacation in the last 14 days.
  • If you have been on an international cruise in the last 14 days.
  • If you live with someone who has symptoms of COVID-19 or has tested positive for COVID-19.

Those recommendations apply to those who don’t have COVID-19 symptoms as well. It important to take your temperature twice a day to see if you develop a fever. Monitor your symptoms. If you do begin to develop a fever, cough or experience shortness of breath, stay home and isolate from others in the house until you’re fever free for at least 72 hours, your other symptoms (cough and shortness of breath) have improved, and at least 7 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared.

Call MercyOne Health Line at 641-428-7777 to talk to a nurse about your symptoms and they will give you guidance if you need to be seen or if you can recover at home.
