Steckman seeks seventh term representing Cerro Gordo County in Iowa House

MASON CITY – Iowa House Assistant Democratic Leader and State Representative Sharon Steckman of Mason City announced on Wednesday that she will seek a seventh term to House District 53. District 53 includes Mason City, Rockwell and central Cerro Gordo County.

“It’s an honor representing North Iowa and serving the hardworking people of District 53,” said Steckman. I’m proud of my work in the Legislature, but there is more to be done. We must prioritize education for all Iowans, pre K-12 and beyond, and invest in our classrooms to make Iowa schools number one again.”

Besides serving in Democratic Leadership in the Iowa House, Steckman sits on the Administration and Rules, Education, Environmental Protection, Natural Resources, and State Government Committees. In years past, she served as Ranking Member on the Education Committee.

“We need to ensure Iowa is an attractive place to live, and that starts with taking care of our precious natural resources. We must protect and enhance our waterways, and invest in conservation practices,” added Steckman.

Prior to her time in the Legislature, Steckman spent 30 years in the classroom, teaching second, fourth and fifth grade. After retiring from teaching in the Mason City School District, Sharon ran for the Iowa House to continue her fight for quality education and a strong community.

Sharon and her husband Alan, have been married 25 years and have four children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
