SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS – The Illinois Department of Revenue announced that adult-use cannabis sales generated $7,332,058 in cannabis tax revenue during the month of January, with an additional $3,147,928.29 generated in retail sales tax revenue. Governor Pritzker’s recently released budget conservatively estimated the state would collect $28 million in cannabis tax revenue during the remainder of the fiscal year, ending June 30, 2020. Today’s announcement puts the state on track to surpass that estimate.
Once administrative fees are accounted for, 45% of the adult-use cannabis tax revenue will be reinvested in communities disproportionately impacted by the failed war on drugs and used to fund substance abuse and mental health programs. The $3,147,928.29 in sales tax revenue will be divided between the state’s general revenue fund and the local governments where purchases were made.
“Today marks another milestone in the successful launch of Illinois’ legal cannabis industry. Our goal has been to build the nation’s most socially equitable program that includes new opportunities for the communities most harmed by the failed war on drugs. Revenue raised in this first month will soon begin flowing back into those communities to begin repairing the damage done by the failed policies of the past and creating new opportunities for those who have been left behind for far too long,” said Toi Hutchinson, Senior Advisor to Governor Pritzker for Cannabis Control.
The state collects cannabis revenue in two ways: a variable excise rate dependent on THC potency and type of product, and a 7% cultivators excise tax imposed on the sale of cannabis to retailers. Earlier this month, the state announced that over $39 million in adult-use cannabis product was sold at retail stores.
Last Wednesday, Governor Pritzker released his Fiscal Year 2021 budget, which projected cannabis sales would generate $28 million in cannabis tax revenue for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2020 (ending June 30, 2020). As the industry matures, revenues are estimated to grow to $127 million in FY21, of which $46 million will go to General Funds.

You’re trying to split hairs. I used the same standard that weed advocates use. Tobacco has never killed anyone with an overdose, just like marijuana.

Saying marijuana has never killed anyone is like saying tobacco has never killed anyone. Nobody dies from a tobacco overdose. You can’t smoke yourself to death.
Very few people actually die from alcohol. According to a numbers from the CDC in Dec., 2019, 6 people everyday (365 days X 6 people = 2190) from alcohol poisoning. Now that’s not the number used, just like 0 is not the number used for tobacco deaths.
The number they use include things like car crashes with fatalities, for alcohol, or lung cancer for tobacco.

Researchers from Germany determined the deaths of two apparently-healthy, young men were in fact the result of marijuana.Researchers concluded, “After exclusion of other causes of death, we assume that the young men died from cardiovascular complications evoked by smoking cannabis.”

Your points are valid but one or two anomalies don’t make for true tests. Look at what the states that have legalized marijuana have done for their citizens with the money that has been generated by legalizing it. Look at the amount of money they have put into education, mental health, infrastructure, rehabilitation services, prevention services and so on. Also, saying cigarettes don’t kill anyone is a big tobacco lie. We have seen the studies and know that cigarette smoking does kill people even those who don’t smoke. It isn’t just one or two cases either. It is hundreds of thousands.

A quote from your original post “The oft-cited justification for legal marijuana, reducing drug-related violent crime, is not materializing.” “Drug-related” means that it could be any drug, including marijuana. My reference was to that statement and that I saw nothing in The Hill article that says legal marijuana is causing that uptick. It only says it isn’t decreasing. So what? Prove to me that legal marijuana is behind the upward trend and I will grant your point, until then quit being a dick.

Where in the quote I posted did it say “murders”, it said “violent crime”. I realize murder is a violent crime, so are other things. That’s what reading comprehension is for.
