Rock Falls woman accused of election misconduct after running for mayor

MASON CITY – A Rock Falls woman has been arrested and accused of election misconduct after unsuccessfully running for mayor in her small town.

According to the a complaint filed by the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, Joanna Augustus was running for mayor of Rock Falls during the 2019 election. She requested a list of all registered voters in Rock Falls through the auditor’s office in Cerro Gordo County. Augustus was the only person that obtained the list, this being verified by the County Auditor and of the office of Secretary of State, the only two places where the list may be obtained. This list was requested twice by Augustus; on October 11, 2019 and December 13, 2019.  Augustus used this list to mail letters from a fake coalition (IOWA COALITION AGAINST CRIMINAL MAYORS) using a fake address (307 Bremer Street, Waverly) to the registered voters on the list, attaching the criminal record of the mayor that had been elected, Megan Quam, who won the election over Augustus, 43 votes to 19 votes.

Augustus was jailed in Cerro Gordo county after a warrant was put out for her arrest. She posted bond and awaits further court appearances.
