Three Panthers advance to semis at Cliff Keen Invite

LAS VEGAS – Nine UNI wrestlers scored bonus points to help UNI close out day one of the Cliff Keen Invite in fourth place with 58 team points and eight wrestlers still alive, including three wrestlers in the semifinals.

Thomsen, Bryce Steiert and Taylor Lujan advanced to the semis with strong performances across the board.

Thomsen scored a major decision in his first-round win over Fresno State’s Greg Gaxiola before picking up an 8-4 decision over Oklahoma’s Jacob Butler and winning a close match against Northwestern’s Yahya Thomas.

Steiert picked up bonus points in his first two matches with a fall in the first round and a major decision in his second round. He advanced to the semifinal with a 4-3 win over Fresno State’s Jackson Hamauer in the quarterfinals.

Lujan also picked up bonus points in the first two bouts, picking up a fall in the first and a major decision in the second round. He won his quarterfinal match 10-8 over Virginia Tech’s Hunter Bolen.

Jay Schwarm lost his second-round match but picked up a trio of pins, including the quick pin on the day for UNI, a 0:34 fall over Jakob Camacho from NC State.

Carter Isley advanced to the quarterfinals with an impressive 7-3 win over North Dakota State’s Brandon Metz before falling to No. 1 seed Mason Parris from Michigan.

Jack Skudlarczyk went 2-1 on the day with an 18-3 technical fall in the consolation bracket. Michael Blockhus dropped his opening round match but closed the day with three consecutive wins, including a 15-7 major decision.

Keaton Geerts picked up a fall in his first round before dropping his second-round match. He closed the day with a major decision and a 6-5 win.

Austin Yant and Noah Glaser both went 1-2 on the day to close out their weekend, but both wrestlers scored bonus points in their wins. Yant won his opening-round bout on a 16-0 technical fall before dropping back-to-back matches. Glaser lost his opening round match but rallied to pick up a fall in his first consolation bout. He lost his second consolation bout.
