Minnesota woman dies in rural Franklin county car crash

RURAL FRANKLIN COUNTY – A Minnesota woman died in a rural Franklin county car crash Saturday morning.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place on Saturday, November 23 at about 8:01 AM on Interstate 35 at the 165 mile marker.

Clayton Hjelmeland, age 31 or Harmony, Minnesota, was driving a 2013 Chevy Silverado southbound on Interstate 35 when he hit an icy patch on the road. His pickup then crossed the median and entered the path of a northbound 2014 Kia Sorento driven by 23-year-old Alyssa Porter of Hastings, Minnesota.

As a result of the accident, Porter was killed. Hjelmeland was injured and taken to Franklin General Hospital by Hampton EMS, as was 23-year-old Jet Jacobs of Ames.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Hampton Fire/Ems, Iowa DOT, Latimer And Coulter Fire/EMS.
