MASON CITY – A fatal motorcycle-car crash that took place September 28, 2018 in a residential Mason City neighborhood has led to a prison sentence for the driver of the motorcycle.

On September 28, 2018, at approximately 11:00 PM, a motor vehicle accident was reported at the intersection of 15th Street and S. Pennsylvania. Brandon Kellar, of Mason City, was driving a motorcycle westbound on 15th Street SE when he struck the rear end of Pontiac G6 as it was making a left turn onto S. Pennsylvania. The Pontiac was driven by Amy Legler, also of Mason City.  Shawn True, age 36, of Mason City was a passenger on Kellar’s motorcycle. Ms. True was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mason City police arrested Brandon Roy Kellar, age 41 of Mason City, in connection with the fatal motorcycle crash on September 28, 2018 at the intersection of 15th and South Pennsylvania.

The collision investigation was completed and as a result of that investigation it was determined that Kellar was under the influence of alcohol, with an alcohol concentration greater than .08 at the time of the crash.  Kellar was charged with Homicide by Vehicle; a class B felony and held at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

After lengthy court proceedings, Kellar entered a guilty plea to C felony vehicular homicide / reckless driving.  Kellar was sentenced to ten years in prison and is now awaiting transport for processing.  He must also pay $150,000 in restitution to True’s family as well as $465.46 in court costs.

There’s a price to pay I agree but it’s sad to see hear all the bitching and tearing him and people down that were around that day partying, drinking and driving. Unfortunately it could have been any of them in either one of these shoes. Nobody stopped any of it, partook in it, until a tragedy happened. Alcohol, drugs, partying, living recklessly , any of those are a disaster in life waiting to happen. Hopefully some people can learn from this and make serious changes in their lives . To insure they are here to live their lives.

Ok so we have a guy who sells a used car to a undercover cop for cash and he gets a mandatory 18 month sentence in a federal prison, he did not hurt nor kill anyone. Now we have a guy that admits he was riding his motorcycle drunk with a passenger and was involved in a accident killing his passenger, he gets a 10 year sentence in prison but with parole maybe he will serve 2 years. WTF is wrong our system? Is a life not worth more than a used car????

I agree with you 100%. Our judicial system is broken and corrupted! In this case, MONEY TALKS!

Difference is one was a Federal case, this one is not federal so it will follow the same guidelines and reduction of time as any Iowa state prison. The accident was a very unfortunate one. These people were friends and partied hard. This had been going on most of the afternoon at the residence with racing up and down the neighborhood all afternoon and such. Alcohol and drugs have horrible consequences for all parties involved. Yes he was driving, this time. Yes he was intoxicated and such just as she was, and others at the residence. Yes she was aware he was and chose to ignore the dangers, same as he did. They both put themselves, the public, and their families at risk. And the worst case happened. Their families and children are paying the high price for their recklessness. Yes very sad she passed away, unfortunately the life behaviors and activities like this have terrible risks and consequences. The speeding, reckless driving had been going on up and down the neighborhood so both were aware when both chose to get on that motorcycle as did everybody at the residence partying. Unfortunately it appears most are still drinking and possibly still putting lives at risk on both sides. People need to stop and think this deadly situation could happen to a lot of you everyday/weekend, smarter choices need to be made. Prayers for all

This guy is nothing but an arrogant SOB! I have witnessed him speeding through town all the time even after this horrible accident! Mommy and Daddy will help him with finances even after he gets out! He will just go back to his daddy’s buiseness of building houses and forget everything that has happened! He doesn’t give a shit! Even the judge said he never showed any remorse for what he has done. I hope he gets to share the same cell with big bubba! He deserves everything he has coming his way!

Let’s see… Alchoholic… Philanderer… Dishonest businessman… Murderer…

oh please

He won’t make it in prison. Guys like him get eaten up in tha clink. They can smell a coward.

speaking of cowards, what was your real name again?

I noticed your name was not on your reply either. I think any reasonable person reading any of these comments about him can assume he was not well liked by anyone in the community.

Except for those who were his friends and partied with him. Including her and many trashing him it appears.

Are you his little BITCH BUTT BUDDY?

Haha. Looks like the truth got you worked up. Sounds like you struggle with your own sexual identity. Not everything is about sex you creep. Get your mind out of the gutter.

On a ten year sentence, the most he can serve is 4 years and 6.5 months with earning all his good behavior. Guarantee he will be paroled in less than 18 months. In other states, and other jurisdictions that don’t have a lazy county attorney, people are doing 25 plus years in similar cases.

I felt bad for the guy because he has to live with what happened everyday for the rest of his life. But drunk driving is a crime. Then he is out in bars drinking and socializing, recently. He should be made to pay for the crime he commited without special consideration because of his mother’s job.

What is his Mothers job?

She works in the probation/parole area.

Drinking and on a motorcycle, wow.
