Mason City man facing sentencing in stalking case is found guilty of violating protective order, gets jail and bill worth over $13K from Iowa courts

MASON CITY – A Mason City man accused of stalking has been found guilty of violating a no-contact order and got a jail sentence and a big bill from Iowa courts as he awaits further sentencing.

Jon C. Pete of Mason City, age 53, is accused of stalking a Mason City woman; sources tell NIT he has “terrorized” her and has relentlessly stalked her for some time, telling NIT in great detail of his antics. NIT is told Pete met the victim last August after he was “moving back to town” from the Nebraska area and a close family member made a Facebook post imploring the community to help Pete find a place to live. After a short courtship that the victim ended, Pete refused to leave the woman alone, and she was forced to call police on a number of occasions. After one call, a police officer was at her home as Pete drove by slowly, NIT is told, and the officer saw him and gave chase, catching him several blocks away near his rented house.

Last week in court, Pete pled guilty to only one violation of a no-contact order and several other counts were dismissed in the deal. He was sentenced to 7 days in jail and must pay the Iowa courts a whopping $13,586.74 plus $1,115.50 in costs and other fees, records show.  He has paid nearly $13,900 on his bill so far, records show, even as he lost his job not long ago, NIT is told, working for a local food distributor after one of his arrests.

Pete is also facing sentencing on a charge of stalking. He and his attorney, Richard Tompkins, who has practiced in Mason City for decades, entered an Alford Plea in the case, which is a guilty plea but the defendant doesn’t give details to the court and avoids a trial. He will be sentenced on December 18, 2019.
