WASHINGTON, D.C. – A judge ruled Thursday that President Donald Trump must pay a $2,000,000 penalty for using his Trump Foundation charity to further his 2016 presidential campaign.
The New York Attorney General’s office said Thursday, “We’ve secured a court order forcing President Trump to pay $2M in damages after admitting to illegally using the Trump Foundation to help him intervene in the 2016 presidential election and further his own political interests. No one is above the law.”
According to the New York Times: “Among Mr. Trump’s admissions in court papers: The charity gave his campaign complete control over disbursing the $2.8 million that the foundation had raised at a fund-raiser for veterans in Iowa in January 2016, only days before the state’s presidential nominating caucuses. The fund-raiser, he acknowledged, was in fact a campaign event.” Court documents show the Trump Foundation improperly used $2.8 million it raised in that televised event, held in 2016 as other GOP Presidential candidates debated in Des Moines.
Trump issued a scathing rebuttal Thursday after news broke that he had settled the lawsuit:

I am the only person I know, perhaps the only person in history, who can give major money to charity ($19M), charge no expense, and be attacked by the political hacks in New York State. No wonder why we are all leaving!
Every penny of the $19 million raised by the Trump Foundation went to hundreds of great charitable causes with almost no expenses.
The New York Attorney General is deliberately mischaracterizing this settlement for political purposes.
In fact, the court rejected the Attorney General’s frivolous request for statutory penalties, interest and other damages.
It has been 4 years of politically motivated harassment – first by lightweight AG Schneiderman, prior to his resignation for beating up women – then AG Underwood, who was impossible to deal with, and now AG Letitia James, who does not acknowledge that we gave 100% of the funds to great charities, but refuses to investigate the Clinton Foundation with all of its problems. All they found was incredibly effective philanthropy and some small technical violations, such as not keeping board minutes.
We resolved the case with the understanding that all money previously in the foundation has gone to charity. I am therefore happy to donate $2 million to the following worthy charities: Army Emergency Relief; Children’s Aid Society; City Meals on Wheels; Give an Hour; Martha’s Table, United Negro College Fund; United Way of Capital Area; and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The funds were raised through the Trump Foundation, but campaign staff managed the fundraiser and distributed the funds to charities. Liberals decided that these funds counted as campaign contributions (zero percent of which went to the Trump campaign), and a judge agreed helped “further Mr. Trump’s political campaign.” One hundred percent of the money raised went to charity, and the Trump campaign covered the entire cost of administering distribution of the funds. But because giving millions of dollars to veterans tends to be good PR for a presidential candidate, a judge decided that this helped further the Trump campaign. So for his efforts to help veterans, Trump was rewarded with a $2 million fine and the billionth bogus media narrative to plague his presidency. Maybe one day the media will choose to discover what the Clinton Foundation is all about.
