Iowa Caucus Journey: Bernie declares victory in Iowa Democratic Youth Caucus Straw Poll

DES MOINES – Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign on Wednesday declared victory in the Iowa Democratic Youth Caucus Straw Poll held this week at hundreds of high schools across the state. Sanders received over 3,700 votes, doubling Joe Biden’s second-place total.

The youngest generation of Americans gravitates to Sen. Sanders’ movement because they understand the future of this country and this planet hinges on transformational change,” said Bernie 2020 campaign manager Faiz Shakir. “Young people know their voices are crucial and their generation is powerful, and they trust Bernie’s lifetime record of consistent advocacy for the working class and against the corporate greed swallowing their futures. Trump thinks he can use demographic differences to divide Americans, and our movement is showing people how strong we can be when we unite across those lines of age, ethnicity, and identity. That’s how you beat him.”

The decisive straw poll victory follows the Sanders campaign building a field-leading youth voter outreach and turnout operation in Iowa. Over 1,500 high school and college students nationwide enrolled in the Students for Bernie Summer School training program, including students from some of the largest high schools in the state and nearly every college in Iowa.

Full results of the Iowa Youth Straw Poll are available on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website here. Late results from high schools are still being added throughout the day.
