DETROIT – Local Union leaders from across the nation met Sunday morning after the 2015 General Motors collective bargaining agreement expired Saturday night and opted to strike at midnight on Sunday.
The autoworkers are calling on the Big 3 automaker to recognize the contributions and sacrifices that the company’s UAW members have made to create a healthy, profitable, industry.
“We stood up for General Motors when they needed us most. Now we are standing together in unity and solidarity for our Members, their families and the communities where we work and live,” said UAW Vice President Terry Dittes.
Following a formal meeting of the GM Council consisting of local union leaders, the UAW announced he membership is going on strike at midnight Sunday to secure:
- Fair Wages
- Affordable Healthcare
- Our Share of Profits
- Job Security
- A Defined Path to Permanent Seniority for Temps
The decision to strike comes a day after UAW Vice President Terry Dittes notified General Motors leadership that the Union would not agree to extend the Collective Bargaining Agreements.
“We told UAW GM members that we would stand up for them and their future,” said Gary Jones, President of the UAW.
National Bargaining Committee Chair Ted Krumm of UAW Local 652 said “We have been clear at the table about what GM members have indicated we will accept. We are standing up for what is right. We as local unions will sacrifice to stand up for what we deserve.”
“Our members have spoken; we have taken action; and this is a decision we did not make lightly. We are committed to a strong contract at GM that recognizes our UAW members, who make some of the greatest products in the world and make GM so profitable.”
President Trump immediately tweeted, “Here we go again with General Motors and the United Auto Workers. Get together and make a deal!”
GM responded, saying in a statement, “UAW Leadership directed UAW-represented General Motors employees to strike at midnight tonight. It’s disappointing we have gotten to this point as we have worked hard to develop creative solutions for our employees and our business. Our negotiating team, led by Gerald Johnson, put forward an offer that prioritizes employees, communities and builds a stronger future for all of us. We presented a fair offer to the UAW leadership that addresses wages, benefits, investments and job security in substantive ways and builds toward our future.”

This story brings to mind a segment on 60 Minutes from a few years back. I forget the specifics, but the story showed the homes of several retired GM production workers, and they lived like kings on their retirement pensions, and something like 60% of the cost of a new GM car doesn’t go to pay for the car, it goes to pay THEIR INFLATED PENSIONS. I have nothing against a worker making a good wage, but there has to be common sense applied here.
I have never read so much anti-worker sediment as I have here. I get the distinct impression that people who complain the most wish they could have a job that pay $23 an hour or more.
At least those people are fighting to keep what they’ve got I’ve worked for companies that unilaterally and arbitrarily decided one day to take all the pension and all the other benefits away because they were not making enough money.
And there was not a thing we could do about it, we had no leverage we had no rights. People with 45 years invested were left with nothing but social security.

I agree. At one time there was a reason for unions. But those times have long past. Now it’s a simple matter of greed, and the only ones making the big bucks are the union management, on the backs of the working person.
If it wasn’t for the start of the first labor unions in late 1700s, we would all be making $5 an hour(maybe), working 7 days a week 10-12 hours a day or more with no benefits or time off. Wether some like unions or not, there was/is a good reason for them.

These overpaid a-holes are the reason our cars prices are so high. They make excellent wages for unskilled jobs with excellent benefits and they want more,more more. The President and Past President are up on theft and corruption charges.

what it comes to is that after a cpl of months of striking and getting no pay checks they will agree on a contract and the raise they get will take 3 yrs of it to make up the money they lost while on strike. no one wins

Business as usual. Larger national companies are quietly raising wages for the hourly employee. $15 seems to be the new standard at entry level jobs outside of Iowa. And the Union ain’t missing a beat either.
