College Football: Iowa drubs Iowa State in rivalry game, 18-17

The rain began before kickoff in Ames and never really stopped for long. Fans partied at the game, anyway.

AMES – Bad weather, long delays and a hostile environment were not enough to derail the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday as they beat their in-state rival Iowa State, 18-17, in Jack Trice Stadium.

Iowa (3-0) defeated Iowa State (1-1), 18-17, on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.  Bad weather and several delays disrupted the flow of the games and made Cyclone fans soaking wet as they endured yet another loss in the rivalry series.

Iowa retains possession of the Cy-Hawk Trophy. Iowa is 14-3 in its last 17 rivalry trophy games (Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin). Iowa has won five straight in the series, its longest streak since winning 15 in a row from 1983-97. The Hawkeyes have won four straight in Ames. Iowa improved to 45-22 in the series.

Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley totaled 222 yards of offense, raising his career total to 5,979, seventh most in school history. He passed James Vandenberg (5,853) and Ma Sherman (5,948) in today’s game. His fourth quarter rushing touchdown was a big play for Iowa. Wide Nico Ragaini receiver was a favorite target for Stanley; he led Iowa with a career-high five recepons.

K Keith Duncan set a career high with four field goals (25, 40, 42, 39). His 39-yard field goal with 4:51 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game winner. He is 8-8 on field goal aempts this season, and 4-4 on aempts 40 yards or longer.
P Michael Sleep-Dalton averaged 47.2 yards on five punts. He had punts of 50 and 51 yards.

DB D.J. Johnson led Iowa with a career-high nine tackles. He had seven solo stops, one tackle-for-loss, and two pass breakups.

FS Jack Koerner had a career-high eight tackles. LB Djimon Colbert and DB Geno Stone matched their career highs with eight tackles.

Iowa held a 2-0 advantage in turnovers, including a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter to clinch the game. Iowa has not had a turnover against Iowa State since 2015.

Iowa has won 10 straight non-conference games since the 2017 season opener.
Iowa is off to a 3-0 start for the third straight year, and the ninth me in the Ferentz era.

The Hawkeyes are idle Sept. 21. Iowa returns to action Sept. 28, hosting Middle Tennessee State at Kinnick Stadium. Game time will be announced Monday.

Jack Trice Stadium was the venue for the big game, once again won by the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Cyclone fans were left to pack up all their earthly belongings and head home with no answers for Iowa’s superior football team, one more time.
