Motorcycle accident claims Mason City man’s life

MASON CITY – A motorcycle accident last Monday in Mason City sent a man to the hospital with injuries, and police announced Tuesday he has passed away.

Around 10:30 AM Monday morning, September 2, an accident involving a motorcycle and truck was reported at 4th Street SW and Eisenhower Avenue.  Officers arrived and determined that a vehicle driven by Marvin Alphs, age 69 of Mason City was traveling east on US Highway 122 attempting to turn north onto South Eisenhower.  A blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by Robert Schwieger, age 56 of Mason City, was traveling west on US Highway 122. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Schwieger was transported to Mercy One Hospital by Mason City Fire Department for injuries.  Alphs was not injured in the accident.

Mason City Police Officers were investigating the accident by measuring the length of the skid marks.  Iowa State Patrol appeared to be on the scene as well.

Alphs was charged with Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device.

Lake Towing was there to get the motorcycle and later Katz Towing would come to check out the red pickup truck, which appeared to have damage.

On September 9, 2019 Robert Schwieger passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident, Mason City police announced.

R.I.P. Uncle Bobby! I’m really going to miss you! And even though the last week has been an emotional roller coaster. Each day as we sat by your side and hoped and prayed by the grace of God for a miracle that you would somehow pull through in was one hardest things ever to have to say goodbye in the end….but even in great sadness, we are content knowing you are now at peace as we look to find comfort in all the memories! Love you

”Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow…..Good bye for now”

Sounds like Alps turned left into the bike. They are hard to see. Especially if they are moving fast like most of them.

Yes, its really hard to see an 8 inch head light, isn’t it?

So, who was involved?
