Alliant Energy implodes Sutherland coal-fired generating station

MARSHALLTOWN – Alliant Energy completed the implosion of the remaining structures of the company’s Sutherland Generating Station (SGS) on Friday. The demolition was carried out by Bierlein Companies from Midland, Michigan and Dykon Blasting Corporation of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The 1950s-era coal-fired facility ceased operations in June 2017 following the construction of the nearby Marshalltown Generating Station (MGS). MGS is a 706-megawatt natural gas-fired facility and is one of the most efficient natural gas power plants in the nation. Its construction complements Alliant Energy’s renewable energy expansion. As a result of investments in wind and solar energy, Alliant Energy will have the ability to provide cleaner energy for more than 600,000 Iowa homes.

“After Sutherland was built, our employees did a tremendous job maintaining and operating it for decades on behalf of our customers. Now we’re using new technology that will produce cleaner energy in more cost-effective ways.” said Terry Kouba, President of Alliant Energy’s Iowa energy company.

The retirement of Sutherland is in line with Alliant’s goal to advance clean energy. Approximately 30% of the company’s fossil-fueled generation capacity has been retired since 2005. This includes over 1,000 megawatts of retired coal-fired generation. More information is included in this 2019 Corporate Sustainability Report.

At its peak, Sutherland’s three turbines could generate a total of 165 megawatts of electricity and employed more than 60 people. Decommissioning work began in August  2018. Friday’s implosion provides a safer and more cost-effective way to clear the property. More than 99% of the materials from SGS will either be reused on site or recycled.

Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: LNT) provides regulated energy service to 965,000 electric and 415,000 natural gas customers across Iowa and Wisconsin.

How much will they charge us for this?

They are already doing it! It is in Your electric and gas bill! They lie to the public about what they are doing! Yes Alliant gives money to organizations but that is just a cover-up to make themselves look good! The state should never allow them to NEVER raise rates again! They should disclose the thousands of dollars they give managers for bonuses every year!!

i dont give a damn who they donate to, my bill is over the top expensive and we actually make a conscious effort not to run to much or leave lights and that type of thing. If cutting off some meals for johhny no parents makes my bill lower im fine with that to hell with the little orphan. power companies are meant to supply power for a reasonable price and thats the bottom line. they dont need to be participating in any activity other than generating power. this jacking the rates depepnding on the season and jacking rates every few months thing is getting old. people used to solve problems back in the day, alliant is going to continue to abuse us until we put ceo heads on pikes or our local government pretends to give a damn about us and stops the monopoly and price gouging. if everyone who worked for alliant burst into flames right now itd be a miracle from on high.

Iowa needs to De-Regulate electricity as many other states have done. This lets the consumer purchase their electricity from any supplier they want and drives down the cost to us consumers.

Alliant is a rip-off and the State Of Iowa knows it!

I agree with you 100%! MONOPOLY and they know it and the state knows it! Please EVERYONE, keep an eye on your bill from now on if you don’t trust the new smart meters! I sure hell don’t! My electric bill has gone up monthly since they replaced mine!

What they failed to tell the public, is the coal plant cost less per kw/h than the new natural gas plant.

Let’s go down the list shall we?

Coal: 4.1¢ per kw/h
Natural Gas: 5.2¢ per kw/h
Wind: 4.3¢ per kw/h
Solar: 7.7¢ per kw/h
Nuclear: 3.5¢ per kw/h

So what are the environmentalists forcing down our throat? The most expensive options of course.

They will charge us customers for the cost! Monopoly! Horrible company to work for! They hand pick their managers that don’t know crap about what they are doing! Just like the idiot that is in charge of the local office! Just a young punk, YES MAN!
