Carlos O’Kelly’s restaurant to be torn down in Mason City, replaced with tire store

MASON CITY – The former Carlos O’Kelly’s restaurant building in Mason City is being torn down and will be replaced with a tire store.

Demolition of the former Carlos O’Kelly’s restaurant building began in Mason City on Monday, August 19, 2019. The Carlos O’Kelly’s restaurant closed permanently on May 30, 2017 and has been vacant ever since, despite attempts to lease the structure.

According to city documents, Discount Tire has a permit to construct a new store at this location at 3331 4th Street SW once Carlos is totally gone. No other details were released to the public immediately about the new store that is coming, but construction is expected to start soon.

There does happen to be a Big O tire store across the parking lot from this location.

Another tire store is a good thing. Along with more Mexican Restaurants. Ever hear of supply and demand, competition driving prices down, dealers trying to out do each other on customer service? If new businesses are willing to take the risk then so be it.

Tire stores, Mexican Restaurants, Fitness centers and used car lots on every other corner Mason City has it GOING. Rock On..

Then you start up a different kind of business then Anonymous.

We miss Carlos O’ Kelly’s and always had good food there. It was always busy, it seemed. Why did this happen? Greed?

Yay another tire place within walking distance to the next closest tire place. Is this town freaking crazy? Over abundance of restaurants, hotels and now tire stores, all employed at low wages. Let’s just keep adding more of the same type of stores to our area causing stores of they same to eventually go out of business. With no higher wage employment opportunities or businesses in our area. Let’s just keep running Mason City all the way into the ground. Seriously beginning to wonder if Mason City officials are purposely doing just that.

You start up a business then!

Have you seen the spare tire that eLViS carries around with him? Never know when you are gonna need one when you have a blow out in a wheelchair!

Whos doing the demolition of the building?

McKinness

We really need three more tire stores and six more mexican eateries. this towns a dump.

You’re a dump. All these people complaining when none of you are willing or able to start up a business. Think before you speak! Any new business should be welcome.

Another place selling tires. Maybe Mason City should look into attracting a big tire maker into town. Build a huge factory for making tires in the old Sears parking lot area or something. Bring some jobs into the city that are good paying. MC need a new brand to sell to the world. Lets make Mason city the tire capital of Iowa. Yeah, tires. That’s the ticket. And ole’ River City keeps rolling on…

Hardy’s would put a stop to it because of the smell , they just want garbage dumps in town. Like there own….

And PL would be back in business building houses.

Dear “ole’ River City keeps rolling on…”
Thank you for the chuckle this morning when I read your post.

I think a Olive Garden would really bring the people into town. Not to mention the high paying wages.

Younkers would be good place for a tire store.
