Mason City police warn of prize claim scam

MASON CITY – Mason City police are warning citizens of a scam where they must send valuables in order to claim a prize.

On August 8, 2019, the Mason City Police Department was dispatched to speak with a citizen who received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Publisher’s Clearing House telling they have won a prize of $125,000.00. In order to claim the prize, they needed to send several gift cards of $500.00 when they arrived to delivered the prize.

This is scam and the police department would like people to be aware of this and be very suspicous of unsolicited of calls of this nature.

maybe if they call we can ask where we can drop the gift cards off in person and then ….. we help them see the error of their ways.

This makes me feel superior for knowing how “do not disturb” works on my phone.
