Shots fired in Fort Dodge; one hurt

FORT DODGE – As many as 20 gunshots were fired in Fort Dodge Saturday night in Fort Dodge, leaving one teen hurt.

On Saturday, August 3, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received multiple calls at approxirnately 1:34 P.M. regarding shots fired in the area of the 1800 block of 4lst Ave South. Information indicated that a vehicle may have been involved and fled the area. Officers with the Fort Dodge Police Department arrived a short time later and contacted a 16-year-old male who appeared to have been injured by gunfire. In addition, officers located evidence of multiple shots being fired in the area.

The 16-year-old male was transported by personal vehicle to Unity Point —Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries to his legs. Officers with the patrol and investigations division continued to process the scene for evidence and seek out information from witnesses in the area. Collection of evidence near the scene indicated there were close to twenty shots fired. Police said in a statement, “It is simply nothing short of a miracle no other bystanders were injured in this senseless act.”

The Fort Dodge Police Department is continuing to follow up on this case and “strongly encourage those who have knowledge of this incident to come forward. Those involved clearly have no regard for the safety of the general public and acts like this cannot be tolerated. Anyone with information rnay contact the Fort Dodge Police Department or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers.”

Police say they have reason to believe those involved knew one another and do not feel as though this was a random act.
