IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa athletics department announced Wednesday that head coaches Dave DiIanni, Tyler Stith, and Joey Woody have signed five-year contract extensions to keep them in Iowa City through June 30, 2024. The announcement was made by Gary Barta, Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair.
All three coaches are entering their sixth seasons leading their respective Hawkeye programs; DiIanni as head women’s soccer coach, Stith as head men’s golf coach, and Woody as director of track and field/cross country.
“Dave, Tyler, and Joey have advanced their programs in all three phases of Win. Graduate. Do It Right,” Barta said. “Their student-athletes and teams have enjoyed success in competition, and are succeeding in the classroom and in the community. I am grateful for their efforts and appreciate their continued dedication to Iowa Hawkeye Athletics.”
Dave DiIanni, head women’s soccer coach
DiIanni has won 46 games and advanced to two Big Ten Tournaments in five seasons. Under his watch, five Hawkeyes have garnered All-Big Ten and three have earned all-region honors on the field. In the classroom, the program had its first two academic All-Americans — Kaleigh Haus and Hannah Drkulec — in school history, and the team has earned the United Soccer Team Academic Award in each of his five seasons.
DiIanni also led the program on its first international tour in May, 2019. The Hawkeyes traveled to Germany, Sweden, and Denmark for a 10-day foreign trip.
“I want to thank Matt Henderson and Gary Barta for their continued belief in me and the direction of our program. I am fortunate to be surrounded by great people. Our program’s success is dependent upon the outstanding efforts of our student-athletes, assistant coaches, and entire support staff. This is an exciting time for Iowa soccer,” DiIanni said.
Tyler Stith, head men’s golf coach
Stith has led the Hawkeyes to top-four finishes at the Big Ten Championships four times, advanced to four NCAA Regionals, and totaled three or more top-three tournament finishes all five seasons. An Iowa men’s golf student-athlete has earned All-Midwest Region accolades 11 times over the past five seasons under Stith.
This past season, Stith led Iowa to five top-five finishes, including winning the Hawkeye Invitational with a school record 54-hole score of 809 (-43), topping the previous mark by a staggering 24 strokes, while also setting a school record for 18 holes with a first-round score of 262 (-22). Junior Alex Schaake was tabbed the 2019 Men’s Big Ten Golfer of the Year and earned the Les Bolstad Award for leading Big Ten student-athletes with a 70.81 stroke average, along with being named a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honoree.

Joey Woody, director of track and field/cross country
Woody led the Hawkeyes to the men’s Big Ten Championship in 2019, and saw Iowa crown its first national champion in 13 seasons when Laulauga Tausaga won the women’s discus title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was named Big Ten and USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men’s Coach of the Year.
Since arriving on campus, Woody has led Iowa to 35 Big Ten individual titles, 10 relay titles, a men’s Big Ten team title, 137 All-America honors, and one NCAA title. The Hawkeye women have placed third at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in each of the last two years, their highest place in program history, and the men and women have combined to win three Hy-Vee Cups at the Drake Relays in the last three years.
“It is an honor to be a part of this university. I am committed to providing the very best for our student-athletes and coaches, and I want to thank Gary Barta and Matt Henderson for their continued support in building a championship program,” Woody said.
