College Football: Pair of Cyclones named to watch lists

AMES – The John Mackey Award preseason watch list was announced and sophomore Charlie Kolar is on the list.

The John Mackey Award is given annually to the nation’s best tight end.

A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar was an All-Big 12 Second-Team selection in 2018 as ISU’s go-to tight end.

Kolar had 11 catches for 137 yards in 2018, including three touchdowns, which ranked third on ISU’s freshman list.

Iowa State sophomore center Colin Newell was named to the Rimington Trophy preseason watch list, announced today by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.

The Rimington Trophy is given annually to the nation’s best center in college football.

Newell, a native of Ames, Iowa, started 12 games at center as a freshman in 2018.

Newell helped the Cyclones average 30.9 points in their last nine games of the season and was a member of a unit that was instrumental in assisting the team to a 76.1 pct. success rate in the red zone, a clip which ranked 10th nationally.

Newell also helped the Cyclones rank 14th nationally in completion percentage and helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rusher David Montgomery, who was an All-American by Pro Football Focus.
