WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Steve King introduced a bill this week that would add a question to the 2020 census form asking people if they are U.S. citizens.
The move comes after the Supreme Court struck down a Trump administration move to add the question on its own to the census form. After introducing his bill, King said:
Congressman Steve King“Overall, the Supreme Court ruling delaying the Trump Administration’s restoration of a citizenship question to the decennial census is a ridiculous example of judicial overreach,” said King. “However, buried within Part III of the decision is an important 5-4 majority holding that shouldn’t be overlooked. That holding makes it clear that as a matter of Constitutional law, the Enumeration Clause ‘permits Congress, and by extension the Secretary, to inquire about citizenship on the census questionnaire.’
That holding underscores the need for swift consideration and passage of my ‘Census Accuracy Act.’ My bill requires the asking of a citizenship question on the census, and its swift enactment would prevent the Supreme Court from continuing to second-guess the Trump Administration’s legitimate census policy choices. American citizens are losing representation in the House of Representatives due to illegal immigration, and American citizens should question the motives of a Congressional majority that panders to illegal aliens by accepting it.”
King is the author of HR 1320, the Census Accuracy Act, legislation he introduced that requires the Census Bureau to include a question identifying a respondent’s status. Last week, King secured 192 votes in the House in favor of a King amendment that allows federal funds to be used to add the citizenship question to the 2020 census.
Congressman King claims to be “the leading Congressional proponent of restoring a question regarding respondent’s citizenship status to the census, and he has worked effectively to advance this cause.” In February of 2018, King led a letter signed by 10 Members of Congress expressing support for requiring the decennial census to ask about citizenship. “We write to demonstrate our strong support for requiring the decennial census to ask respondents about their citizenship status,” the King letter states. “Adding a citizenship question would result in American citizens being more accurately represented in Congress.”
Meanwhile, King announced that he will be hosting two town hall meetings on Tuesday, July 2. Both town halls are open to the public and to the media.
The first of the two town halls will be held in Butler County at the Parkersburg American Legion Post 285 Building located in Parkersburg at 110 Colfax St. The Butler County town hall will run from 9:00-10:00 AM Central.
The second of the day’s town halls will be held in Humboldt County at the Dakota City VFW located in Dakota City at 412 Main Street. The Humboldt County town hall will run from 2:00-3:00 PM Central.

hey. if law enforcement would do their job and prioritize we wouldnt even have illegals answering census questions. cops need to be out here asking for brown ppls identification and social trying to determine if either is real after that they need to be out here looking for gang members that sell drugs. immigrants and powdered narcotics should be the top priority for PUBLIC SERVANTS.

Buddy, NW Iowa is one of the poorest areas of the state with severe worker shortages. I could care less about a couple blocks in Sioux City, the rest of the area he represents is economically stagnant at best and has been for DECADES. Economic development needs to be be more of a priority if your goal is to truly help Iowa’s workers and tax payers. Seems like NW Iowa’s actual goal is instituting religious based laws and keeping brown people out.

Asking people of they are citizens is a horrible idea, mainly because federal funding for roads, hospitals, schools, public works, and other public services to cities and states equaling $675 billion is based on the census; if there’s a citizen question less people are going to respond to the census. If there are a reported 15,000 people in the community but there are actually 22,000 guess who will suffer, everyone in local communities and the state, including US citizens. 15,000 people compared to 22,000 people means less of a piece of that pie for all those services mentioned. Face it, the people who are writing comments on this article have no idea what the census is even for.
The citizenship question has been on the census since it first started until Obama had it removed by executive order. It should have been approved by congress. It is an important question because sanctuary states like California will get an unfair number of seats in congress if non citizens are counted. I don’t give a crap about your roads and bridges if the rest of the country has to pay for them because you are stacked with non citizens.
someone mentioned the idea of finger printing when they do the census, i dont know if thats bs or not but i wont do it. im not a criminal, try to take my finger prints and find out how private property works. in any case im a legal citizen and white male. i avoid the census and refuse to participate. its a pain in the butt invasion into my personal time. if im not on anyones clock i wont be doing anything i simply dont feel like doing. some stranger knocking on the front door? wanting to ask me questions? who has the time for that! its extremely annoying when people knock on the door. if you cant text or call ahead you probably have zero reason to be at someones house.

As mandated by the Constitution, the census must count all people in the U.S. – adults and children, citizens and noncitizens alike.
we can count all persons, we just need to know the number of citizens so we can allocate seats in congress based on the number of citizens. What is so confusing to you that you don’t understand that? Congress represents the citizens of our country. Non citizens can answer the question, we will know the population but only citizens count toward #’s of representatives in congress.

A census has nothing to do with voting rights. Do we want to know how many people actually live here or not? Using the census as a tool for ICE is not legally binding. The SCOTUS just ruled that the writers of the proposal must prove that this isn’t just a ruse to seek out immigrants.
