Department of Public Safety supports Governor Reynolds’s Veto of law expanded uses of medical Cannabidiol

DES MOINES – The Department of Public Safety supports Governor Reynolds’s decision to veto House File 732, relating to the Medical Cannabidiol Act, the agency said in a statement.

The Department believes that HF 732 has numerous beneficial components that take into account the needs of medical cannabidiol patients while moving the Medical Cannabidiol Program forward.

However, the Department shares the Governor’s concern that HF 732 allows for the potential abuse of the Medical Cannabidiol Program by allowing participants to receive up to 25-grams of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in a 90-day period. This is in contrast to the recommendation from the practitioners on the Medical Cannabidiol Board, who recommend a 4.5 gram limit over 90 days.

Moving forward, the Department looks forward to assisting with legislation that furthers the needs of the Medical Cannabidiol Program while balancing the potential risks of abuse to the community. Although HF 732 does not represent the solution, we are excited to work with the Governor, legislators, and stakeholders to find an outcome that can be successful for Iowans.
