Toxic spill near Fort Dodge traced to soil fertility company

Information from Iowa DNR
FORT DODGE – Last Wednesday, the DNR investigated a report of discolored and foamy water in Holiday Creek about two miles east of Fort Dodge.

DNR specialists traced the pollutant source to an underground tile line. Checking with local businesses, the DNR identified the pollutant as lignin sulfonate, used by Calcium Products to manufacture a soil fertility product.

Company officials said the lignin sulfonate is stored in an indoor tank and they are unsure how it spilled. The company plugged the tile line and are cleaning up the road ditch above Holiday Creek.

DNR took water samples for laboratory testing. Specialists saw no sign of dead fish or aquatic animals, but the bulk of the product had moved downstream before they arrived.

The DNR will continue to monitor cleanup and will consider appropriate enforcement action.

Cheap ass white trash farmers probably did it.
Bunch of sister marrying hillbilly

Probably used to grow the pot you smoke, dopehead.

Says the guy who drinks cheap beers around a fire pit in the rain.

Nothing illegal about that.

No just goes to show how stupid you are.

And what do you do that gives you the delusion that you are smarter than everyone else?

And assuming someone is a dophead you don’t even know shows how smart you are.
Farmers been dumping shit for years don’t act like they all some ethical bunch.

Also, assuming farmers, who you do not know, are white trash sister marrying hillbillies demonstrates your lack of intelligence.
Reread the article and do a little research and you will find that it is a company (not farmers) which processes limestone and gypsum.
Speaking of dumping, take a tour of the ditches along the lesser traveled gravel roads outside the city, I’ll bet none of that was discarded by any farmers.
Finally, I never claimed farmers were an ethical bunch and it is obvious by your comments neither are you.

The DNR is just like the police, they only show up after the crime and do nothing to prevent it from happening.

Exactly how do you suggest they investigate incidents like this before it happens?

Enforcement now a days depends on getting complaints from citizens. But if Mason City serves as an example, people here turn a blind eye towards blight and illegal operations. They would just assume live in their neighbors filth than get involved.

And if citizens do call anyone, it ends up being the City, and they are about as useless as a screen door on a submarine. To be sure, they never inform the DNR about illegal issues.

My comment still stands. It is the way things are. However, I do agree with your comment.

These people have a responsibility to keep their poison out of our water.
