Heavy rains cause roof collapse in Mason City at historic Mohawk Square

MASON CITY – Heavy rains caused a roof to collapse in Mason City at the historic Mohawk Square.

The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health will be closed on Monday, May 20, 2019 until further notice. The Mohawk Square building, located at 22 N Georgia Avenue, suffered damage over weekend from the storms that came through North Iowa. The building is owned by Doris Determan, records show.

Details regarding the extent and type of damage are still being assessed. It is unknown at this time when the building will be reopened; therefore the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health will be closed until further notice.

Health Department nurses and home care aides will be contacting their patients as soon as possible to plan their care schedules for the upcoming week. The on-call home care phone number is 641-431-3001.

Mohawk Square has been home to Mason City High School and then later Mason City Junior College. It is now home to numerous offices for local and county programs.

Pretty sure dhs already had plans to ditch that building anyway, read that somewhere a couple weeks ago. Old curries office, has to be big enough for a couple other agencies for the welfare sponge’s. It was nice having all the skid offices in one place up town and not in a neighborhood. Now the trash are gonna be filtering all through a neighborhood that used to be quiet before dboys moved onto 8th Street to ruin the area, now all the low income meth mom’s will be driving through and so will all the other dirtbags on their way to get free shit.

There’s veterans who depend on those services you ridicule people for as also elderly people.

There’s only a small percentage who abuse the services and eventually will get caught.

So maybe don’t be so quick to assume something you know nothing about.

in 1966 the building was closed and move to new H.S. because it was unsafe, the gym had been closed at that time for years. it was condemned or so we were told by school board and the need for a new building. Determanns bought it for $12,000 and since have made millions off of renting it to the state. tear it down and make a hockey rink east in its plaace

The top floor (4th) was condemed back in the late 50’s.

With time and money, old buildings can be repaired and brought back to standards. There are some buildings, such as the Rookery, built in 1888, which still are fully functional, and is a very successful office building. So it can be done.

Local evidence of bringing an old building to new modern standards is the Manor.

I would imagine that there was no indication that this was going to happen. Preemptive inspections are difficult as there is roofing material covering the structural portions of the building.

They just put a new roof on it two years ago and could have inspected it then.

Typical Iowa building construction always half ass work along with half ass attitude.

Ya, all our construction crews are shitty and it’s their fault. Anything else ignorant and negative you wanna get off your chest before nobody pays attention to you? Hey admin, let’s make it so we can use colorful language again? It is a public forum used by the public and the public happens to swear and there are still some Americans who believe that censorship is wrong and freedom of speech means freedom of speech. You’re kind of a Nazi turd controlling how people are allowed to speak on your little website. You’re kind of a little girl just like the guy who posted the comment proving he’s an a hole.

Sounds like they need a new building.

To bad. Historic building!

They should tear this building down and build a mall in its place.

With a ice skating rink.

Occasionally you have to do maintenance on these old buildings.
