MASON CITY – The Kraft Heinz plant in Mason City is approved for a multi-million dollar expansion, bringing new jobs.
Councilman Paul Adams said Friday that Kraft Heinz has announced plans to invest $62.8M into Mason City with an expansion at their current location on 12th St. NW. The expansion will create 32 new jobs that will pay approximately $18.00 an hour and offer benefits.
“This is huge news for our city and North Iowa,” Councilman Adams said. He noted that the project was set to go before a state economic development board Friday, as the company was seeking state incentives.
According to Chad Schreck of the North Iowa Corridor, at the board meeting Friday morning, “the $62.8 million expansion project with Kraft Heinz Co. was approved. Greatly appreciate the investment and commitment in North Iowa, and the 32 new jobs coming to our community.”
The Des Moines Register reports that Kraft Heinz asked for $232,500 in tax breaks from the state and will also want a 10-year tax increment finance rebate worth $185,000 from the City of Mason City.

A lot of company’s don’t even test anymore unless there is a accident or promotion. They have found they just can’t get people if they test. The ones that still do test because their insurance requires it.

Did the city really ‘kick out’ Prestage???? Seems like most of the city council was for the Prestage project. But as usual, the coalition of geriatric curmudgeons in this town went and made a circus side show at city council meeting s and sunk the project. If this town is to ever grow again, we have to stop accommodating the lowest common denominator all the time.

They would come and you know it. They would come from towns all around Mason City. If you offer more money you will get workers.

No all jobs at the Prestage facility would be menial labor at $13/hr. A packing plant requires business executives, managers, maintenance persons, refrigeration techs, IT professionals, office positions, etc. Not to mention all the ancillary business which will follow a plant of this scale such as third party cold storage, packaging suppliers, refrigeration contractors…I’m not so sure this type of development would ‘jack up’ our schools. Your kids might actually pick up Spanish form classmates which is actually a very marketable skill in todays workforce.
