Iowa law enforcement will accelerate efforts to ticket lawbreakers over holiday weekend

DES MOINES – Iowa law enforcement will accelerate efforts to ticket lawbreakers over the Memorial Day weekend and motorists should be aware.

Memorial Day and the traditional beginning of summer are quickly approaching.  Unfortunately, with the increase in summer traffic we will also see a rise in traffic crashes and fatalities.  Last year there were four traffic fatalities on Iowa roadways over the Memorial Day weekend; four deaths that may have been prevented.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2017 there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide.  A majority of those lives could have been saved if they had been wearing seat belts.  The national Click It or Ticket campaign will take place May 20 – June 2, 2019.  State and local law agencies across the state will be stepping up seat belt enforcement with the goal of protecting you and your family.

Seat Belt Myth Busters

Vehicle Type:  There seems to be a misconception among those who drive and ride in pickup trucks that their large vehicles will protect them better than other vehicles would in a crash.  Fifty-nine percent of pickup truck occupants who were killed in 2017 were not buckled compared to 42 percent of car occupants.*

Seating Position:  Too many people believe they are safe in the back seat unrestrained.  Forty-six percent of all front-seat passenger killed in 2017 crashes were unbelted but 56 percent of those killed in the back seat were unbelted.*

Rural versus Urban:  People who live in rural areas might believe that their chance of being in a crash is lower but in 2017 there were 12,786 passenger vehicle fatalities in rural locations compared to 10,316 fatalities in urban locations.  Of those fatalities, 49 percent of those killed in rural locations were not wearing their seat belts compared to 44 percent in urban locations.*

The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau want to remind all drivers of the importance of seat belt use.

I think I figured out why SAD didn’t go get one of them luxury jobs with the big money. He either couldn’t pass the testing or he couldn’t pass the background check or maybe even both. sounds to me like he is the one that got all them traffic tickets. heard a good one, officer stopped a car and approached and notified the driver why he was stopped and to have a seat for a moment. on the way back to the patrol car the driver leaned out his car window and yelled at the officer “your not going to give me a ticket, are you??” the officer replied, no im not gunna give you a ticket we don’t just give them away, you have to earn them. remember that the next time you get a ticket, did you earn it???

stupid, forgot to say, wish you would have been around 35 yrs ago, I started working for $650 a month and 35 yrs later retired at $45,000 a yr, now tell me I was getting rich???

sad but true, you just showed how stupid you are. its not to write tickets, its to save lives. some people just wont obey the laws that are there to protect them without getting tickets. as far as salaries, why didn’t you apply and get hired if you wanted to make that money?? I was in law enforcement for over 35 yrs, missed out on my family growing up, missed the softball games, the PTO meetings, the school plays and etc., the thankgiving dinners, opening packages on christmas, the birthday partys, football games, and more while I was working to make sure you had a safe celebration. you could have also walked into a call where a 15 yr old put the high powered rifle in his mouth or the 1000,s of traffic accidents where the 2 yr old was very badly hurt or killed. want me to go on?

I’m surprised dumocrats don’t banned vehicles that kill people like SUV’S ! I heard one jumped the curb the other night and killed someone in there bed.

I heard you molest pigs.

Hey lady watch your mouth.

Real Iowa Occurance

A driver is charged $300 for having a dummy in the passenger’s front seat, dressed in a purple hoddie and a pair of sunglasses. Trying to avoid charges for not having 2. bodies in the car in order to drive in the carpool lane. My next question would be this, could a hurse carrying a clothed body not living drive in the carpool lane; also avoid being charged $300?

Why would a hearse drive in the carpool lane?

sitting in the weeds writing seatbelt tickets is a sad way for our professional law enforcement to justify their 100.000 a year salary. You would think they could aim higher

Like scoff-laws, habitual violators, drunks? That sums it up pretty good.

Guess you did not listen to the radio last night. Woman trapped in rising waters under a RR Bridge. Officer arrives on the scene, rescues her baby, then her. Did you also notice that two State Patrolmen were in Mason City last night to help people stuck in water? No one asked them to, they just arrived to assist. It was pouring rain, they could have easily just sat in the squad and let MCPD handle it.

Troopers on I-35 last winter, driving in almost zero visibility, worked throughout the night getting people out of vehicles that went into the ditches, and to warm places. Even their squads got stuck while bringing people to Clear Lake after the plows got pulled, and had to be rescued themselves.

In March, a trooper driving home, sees a man driving the wrong way on an Interstate, maneuvers his vehicle in front of a woman and child was killed to keep them safe.

In all, 15 troopers in IL have been hit by vehicles in 2019 alone.

I am sure there are stories one could find in Iowa, as well across the country on Law Enforcement Officers who give of themselves, sometimes, the ultimate sacrifice.

Those who disgrace the badge, are far and few between.

Book-em Danno!
