MASON CITY – The Iowa Utilities Board held a public comment meeting in Mason City on Thursday, and explained proposed rate increases and heard from concerned citizens.
Alliant Energy has filed filed applications with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) requesting a 24.45% retail rate increase for residential electric customers and 25% rate increase for residential gas customers beginning 2020. The meeting, held in the ballroom in the Historic Park Inn in downtown, was designed to address this request . Citizens with concerns had a chance to address the rule-making board about Alliant’s proposed rate increases. Despite an overflow crowd in the ballroom, many more persons wanted to attend but the meeting was held at 11:30 AM, when people have to be at work.
Citizens posed many questions to the board and Alliant representatives, and Alliant also dispersed information to those in attendance.
According to Alliant Energy’s 2018 annual report, “Alliant Energy’s Utilities and Corporate Services income from continuing operations increased $69 million in 2018 compared to 2017. The increase was primarily due to higher margins resulting from IPL’s and WPL’s increasing rate base, higher retail electric and gas sales due to temperatures in 2018 compared to 2017, and higher AFUDC. These items were partially offset by higher depreciation expense.”

A decision on the rate increase is expected in October.

Can Mason city or the county do anything to punish Alliant for raising their rates.
Taxpayers literally pay for their wind turbines. They still increase the rates, even after the turbine savings. This is having your cake and eat it too.

She was there, as was Rep. Steckman, and they both spoke strongly against the rate hike.
All utilities in Iowa should not be allowed to be private. Blame the legislature. They created this mess.
This meeting was a waste of time. They have no intention of reducing their request for a increase. Their CEO might have to take a wage cut to 1/2 million dollars.
Facts, Alliant Energy costs 88% more than the lowest priced provider in the state, and Mid-American Energy is 45% cheaper than Alliant and has more stability in there rates.

Remember around 2004, Alliant wanted a 2% price hike? The Iowa Utilities Board said that, not only could they not raise the rates, they were already charging too much, and made them decrease rates by 2%! It would be nice if these IUB members had that kind of fiduciary integrity, but it doesn’t look that way.
