Iowa police officer shot twice; drug dealer caught and pal charged with attempted murder

DAVENPORT, IOWA – Police in Davenport, Iowa tempted to catch a suspected drug dealer and his pal Thursday afternoon when things turned violent and one man shot an officer twice.

On April 25th at 4:25 PM two Davenport Police Officers attempted to detain two individuals for suspicious activity in the 1500 block of W. 17th St. Both individuals refused. Nathaniel O. Viering, age 27, was taken into custody at that location by one officer, Brett S. Dennis Sr. ran from the area and was pursued by the other officer. An altercation took place between Dennis and the Davenport Officer in a yard in the 1600 block of West 17th St. where Dennis produced a 9mm handgun and shot the Davenport Officer in the chest and leg. Dennis was injured from a single gunshot from the Davenport Officer. He was taken into custody a short time later and treated and released from Genesis East for a gunshot wound to his leg.

Based on a Scott County Sheriff’s Office investigation Nathaniel Viering was charged with interference w/official acts, possession w/intent to deliver, possession 2nd, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft 2nd. Viering was on pre-trial release for theft 2nd at the time of the incident.

Brett Dennis Sr. was wanted on warrants for harassment, FTA contempt of court / child support, criminal mischief 5th, driving while barred, eluding, and no registration at the time of the incident. Dennis has also been charged with attempt to commit murder and felon in possession of a firearm based on the incident.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and is assisted by the Iowa DCI.
