Cresco man who is felon and possessed handgun sent to prison for 10 years

CEDAR RAPIDS – A Florida man who formerly lived in Cresco, Iowa, was sentenced today to the maximum possible sentence of ten years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm.

Patrick Colvin, age 29, from Lake Whales, Florida, received the prison term after a guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Authorities found a loaded gun hidden under a blanket as part of a traffic stop in Waterloo on June 4, 2018. The gun’s serial number had been obliterated. Colvin has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions relating to drug use, drug distribution, theft, and robbery.

Colvin was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. Colvin was sentenced to 120 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

Colvin is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jacob Schunk and investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.

BUT BUT BUT – Your crazy liberal commie party of demorats will give him voting rights – great – any vote for the 2nd amendment rights is great –

hang him! voting problem solved.

Traffic stop ? He could have just as well robbed a bank – 10 years and NO act of violence involved ? Those old 2nd amendment right liberals just want to punish anyone with a firearm – best keep yours cleaned if the commie party rigs the 2020 election.

Where I agree with you on the 2nd amendment comment, it sure looks like his felony record had more to do with it. He is a lifetime criminal.

Are you seriously crying about the “rights” of a career criminal caught with a handgun with the serial number removed? This shitbag should have hung a long time ago, it’s a shame they didn’t get an excuse to shoot him during arrest.

If only there was some sort of wall that would keep these people away and keep us safe from outsiders! Oh…

looks like just another meth head. we should really let other crime go and focus on violence meth and opioids. at least til we have the actual dangerous shit under control. who cares about public intox when kids are dying of fyntinal?
