MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA – Three people were shot Sunday morning in Marshalltown, and police are searching for clues and made an arrest.
On Sunday, April 14, 2019, at approximately 3:48 AM, public safety personnel in Marshalltown, Iowa, responded to the 400 block of Melody Lane after a shooting was reported at this location. Three adults with gunshot wounds were taken to Unity Point Hospital in Marshalltown. Two of these victims have since been transported to medical facilities in Des Moines, police said in a statement later Sunday.
The investigation of this incident is ongoing. Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation – DCI is assisting the investigation.
Police pleaded for help in the crime, saying, “In the last week, Johnston had a shooting, West Des Moines had a murder and Ames had a stabbing. All of this is sad.” Also, this past Friday, a man was stabbed in Dubuque and days earlier, two men were arrested in Des Moines after attacking a fast food worker for a botched order.
Later Sunday, police announced an arrest has been made in connection with this incident. Trevion Devante Hardin, age 22, of Marshalltown has been booked into the Marshall County Jail. Hardin has been charged with the following:
Attempt to Commit Murder – Three Counts (Class B Felonies)
Willful Injury – Three Counts (Class C Felonies)
Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon – Three Counts (Class C Felonies)
Reckless Use of a Firearm – Three Counts (Class C Felonies)

The Justice Department survey in 2017 “Race and Hispanic Origin of Victims and Offenders, 2012-15” found that “from 2012 to 2015, victims and offenders were of the same race in 51 percent of cases of violence. White victims were attacked by white perpetrators in 57 percent of cases, while black victims were attacked by black offenders in 63 percent of cases.” In other words, the rate of violent crime committed against a white victim by a white offender was 12.0 victimizations per 1,000 persons, compared to 3.1 per 1,000 for those committed by a black offender. The rate of violent crime committed against a black victim by a black offender was 16.5 victimizations per 1,000 persons, compared to 2.8 per 1,000 for those committed by a white offender.

Every community has its stars and its losers, and I think you read more racism into the “Shitcago posts” than there necessarily is. At least I don’t think they’re all about racism. Rather, they uses race as a proxy for locals versus out-of-towners, being that most people of color living here are not originally from here.
The harsh reality is that rural Iowa communities are systematically drained of their stars, as they go off to college in the Big City, never to be seen again. The Big Cities returns this favor by exporting their losers using section 8 reciprocity as delivery vehicle. So when some white loser causes trouble in the neighbor county, the assumption is that he is a local. Thus he is legitimately their problem, it is what it is, not much news value there. When OTOH the loser is black, the assumption, valid or not, is that this is yet again Big City sending us their social problems, hence the anger.
