FORT DODGE – Congressman Steve King was assaulted Friday afternoon by Colorado man at a Fort Dodge restaurant.
Fort Dodge police say that at approximately 12:30 PM Friday afternoon, the Webster County Communications Center received a call regarding an assault at the Mineral City Mill and Grill restaurant located at 2621 5th Ave South, in Fort Dodge. Information provided at that time indicated that the incident had ended and all parties involved were still present. Officers with the Fort Dodge Police Department responded.
When officers arrived on scene, they discovered the intended victim, United States Representative Steve King, was having a group lunch when an unknown male approached their table. The male approached Mr. King, inquired as to his identity, and ultimately threw a glass of water on Mr. King. Others having lunch with Mr. King were also struck. Based on witness information, it is believed Mr. King was specifically targeted due to his position as a United States Representative.
The offender in this case was identified as 26-year-old Blake Gibbins of Lafayette, CO. Charges were pressed against Mr. Gibbins who was then arrested without incident and transported to the Webster CountyJail on the following charges:
• Simple Assault – Simple Misdemeanor (two counts) • Disorderly Conduct – Simple Misdemeanor
Neither Mr. King nor the second victim, Burlyn Pecoy of Fort Dodge, were injured in this incident.
I’m a little disappointed the rep King didn’t seize the opportunity to put a bullet through his face. After all, that glass could have contained anything and a credible fear for his life would have justified such action plus he would have been hailed as a hero by all of us who support him
Firing shots in a crowded restaurant is such a good idea. Those patrons who would happen to be in the way of a stray bullet or two would just have to get over it. You are an idiot.

In my eyes, the best you could charge him with is disorderly conduct (a widely used criminal charge in 1968).
Now considering the recent direction of SCOTUS, this very well could be a personal expression, in which case, is protected under the first amendment.
I was incorrect, it was not SCOTUS, but the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. But, I get the feeling it could very well fly with SCOTUS.
Why wasn’t Mr. Gibbins, charged with a “Hate Crime” for this incident?
