MASON CITY – Local Iowa law enforcement agencies will be stepping up traffic enforcement March 14 – 17 to combat drunk driving.
Americans have celebrated their Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day for decades, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a statement today. Sadly, too much green beer can lead to dangerous driving after the celebrating. Over the last few years there has been a dramatic spike in alcohol and drug impaired driving. Over the 2017 (the last year in which statistics are available) St. Patrick’s Day holiday there were 59 fatalities nationwide with 37 percent involving drunk drivers. The most dangerous time to be on the road was the early hours of March 18, when 75% of all crash fatalities involved drunk drivers.
To combat the increased impaired driving around the holiday local law agencies will be stepping up traffic enforcement March 14 – 17, 2019. Officers will especially be watching for drunk and drugged drivers and anyone not wearing seat belts.
“St. Patrick’s Day should be a fun holiday, but we expect everyone to take responsibility for their actions,” stated Patrick Hoye, Bureau Chief of the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. “Whether you’re driving yourself or your friends, make sure you stay sober or plan for a safe ride home. It’s not just about you. There are others on the roads who want to get where they are going safely”.

If, your claim of stopping cars without cause is valid, you would have been in court challenging the practice. However, since I have not heard one case of unjust traffic stops, one has to assume that there is cause.
If you were to observe what our Police actually do, and how they do it, you will find that such a scenario would be prioritized, and officers diverted from other calls.

This is just mason city trying to ‘recoup some lost revenue after all its poor choices. This is a town that ran out of snow removal budget lol winter happens once a year retards. All this amounts to is they want to harrass anyone and everyone they can and write tickets for nothing. Take your money to any other town fir the holidays. do not support mason city financially if you can help it. Local business is just gonna have to suffer because the fun police work in mc. I suppose you are an expert on what our Police do day in, and day out? I suppose you can account for their activity? For the arrests they made? For the accident reports they took? Or that they checked on the welfare of others, and accompanied Medics on medical calls? Or they responded to fires in advance of the FD, and made sure that if there was a problem, people were evacuated?
No, in reality, you probably have no clue what they do. You sit behind a keyboard making incoherent, almost indiscernible comments. In fact, if we had a Police Officer on every corner of the City, you still would not be happy.
Now, as far as our Street Department crews, you could not be farther than the truth. While they might have gone over their budget, a budget set by City Council, and not the head of the department, the crews still continued to work.
You would not know that some of their equipment broke down, and they had to resort to less efficient methods of snow removal. Those men worked long hours to try and get the streets clear. Mother nature was not cooperating as roads just about closed up right behind them.
A lot of the public hampered their efforts, parking cars on both sides, or parking 3 feet from the side where a plow or grader could not get the street clean. Having residents push their snow into the streets from their sidewalks and driveways.
But, I guess you cannot see much from the rock you live under.
While I agree with most of your comment (especially about the police) the reason people blow snow back into the street is the street departments issue. The street department is the one who deposited the snow on the corners after they were cleaned out and in people’s driveways after they were cleaned out. They go up and down the streets five or six times instead of doing the job right the first time. I know they are just doing what their supervisors tell them but it is very irritating to clean out the corners of very wet heavy snow and have it filled back in five minutes later. Then have that done five times.
You’re full of shit. They recently refused to go out and do any snow removal from a Thursday to a Sunday. The police? Us they do pull people over without cause. It happens everyday all across this country and in mason city, i think peoples point about the police is this, stop doing anything at all until you put all your focus on getting rid of meth and where’s their plan on protecting this community from heroin? If someone broke into someone’s home the cops should be able to take their time responding because the home invader should be shot dead. The street crews long hours and inability to do things right…. I have the internet and access to several websites that record and provide arrest records as well as individual calls. I also live in this town and think it’s crazy that I can’t go to the tore without seeing a meth addict or five and that’s just in the cold weather. Some of you get so hostile and worked up about defending this town. I wonder if it’s because you’re the type that put down roots and is firmly planted and has to hope and lie to yourself and those around you that you’re not in a dying town that’s getting worse each and every year. If you are on the roads after 10:00 PM the police will find a reason to pull you over and check you out. If they don’t have a legitimate reason to pull you over they will make one up. The one they are using now in the license plate is covered with snow. They let people drive with their window covered but pull you over for a covered license plate.
