MASON CITY – Mason City High School announced that Brandon Krusey has been selected as its Head Football Coach for the 2019-2020 school year. His hiring is subject to school board approval at its scheduled meeting on Monday, February 18, 2019
Coach Krusey is coming to Mason City from Davenport, Iowa along with his wife, Jess, and their children Jaxen, Alicia, Brianna, Vanessa, and Emma.
Coach Krusey has a career head football coaching record of 84-70.
The Wildcats went 1-8 in 2016, Coach Krusey’s first season. In 2018, he led North to a 5-4 record.
He is also the Strength Coach and Head Girls Track Coach at Davenport North.
Prior to coming to Davenport North, Coach Krusey was the Defensive Coordinator at Davenport West High School.
From 2012-2014, Coach Krusey was the Head Football Coach, Head Boys Track Coach, and the Strength & Conditioning Coach at Independence JR/SR High School. While there, he turned the football program around from a 3-6 record his first season to a 6-3 record in his third season.
From 2009-2012, he was the Head Football Coach, Head Boys Track Coach, and the Strength & Conditioning Coach at Grundy Center. In 2011, his football team qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 17 years.
From 2001-2009, he was the Head Football Coach at North Tama where his teams qualified for the playoffs five out of eight seasons. North Tama was the State Runner-Up in 2008.
As a Head Football Coach, his teams have qualified for the playoffs 7 times.
He was the 2018 Class 4A District 4 Coach of the Year. In 2017, he was the Class 4A District 7 Coach of the Year Finalist. While at Grundy Center, he was the 2011 Class A district 3 Coach of the Year.
Coach Krusey has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wartburg College in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Social Studies (K-8). He will complete his (K-12) Strat II BD/LD Special Education endorsement in May. Currently, he is the Special Education Department Head where he is responsible for overseeing all of the Special Education programming at Davenport North High School.
Coach Krusey played high school football at Aplington-Parkersburg.
Coach Krusey commented, “Jess and I are very excited about the opportunity and can’t wait to meet all the wonderful people of Mason City and to join a tremendous group of teachers, coaches, and administrators at Mason City High School. We are proud to be new Mohawks!”
There are bigger kids out for chorus then football.
The talent pool is weak. The town’s support is weak. The town is aging. Less kids out due to concussion issues. Other teams free agent away any of the MC players that show promise. GOOD LUCK

He will NEED to change the attitudes at MCHS, Just as Barry Alvarez changed the attitudes when he took over.
(I am not saying he is Barry, I am saying he will need to take control and hearts and minds)

Ed Lenuis was a huge part of what made Barry successful.
Hey guys lets give him a chance. Just maybe with some new blood coming in some of the students that are out walking the streets nd hallways might have the talent. We got to give this guy a chance. Don’t expect a miracle. Lets give him and his family a big welcome and if things don’t change we wont have to ask him to leave he will pack his bags and leave.. I feel he has to be a pretty good coach as he played at Aplington-Parkersburg and he learned a lot there. Great teams under Coach Thomas.

I am going to disagree with you here. I do not believe the kids here are any worse athletes then anywhere else in the state. The problem was and is the coaching and the support they get. get the damn parents out of school sports and play the better athletes and they will win.
100% disagree. MCHS had 3 decent players that all graduated.
A .545 winning % wow not to impressive for that percentage hire the assistant or middle school coach and save $ duh

What were you expecting? Davenport North was worse off than Mason city when he started there and he turned them into a winning program in 3 years. Did you expect MC to hire the Dowling or Valley Coach? I think MC is very fortunate to get a 4A coach to even apply for the job based on our facilities and prior support of athletics. Give the guy a chance!!!

He has been named a district coach of the year three times, coached seven teams to playoff berth’s and he payed high school football at one of the best HS football programs in the state. I would say the MCHS football program is already moving in the right direction.
