Married Iowa men fight, one ends up shot

WEST DES MOINES – A married male couple got into a fight Sunday night in West Des Moines, police say, and one ended up getting shot and both were injured.

On Sunday evening, January 27, 2019 at approximately 10:45 PM, West Des Moines Police received several calls on a fight and gunshots heard in the 400 block of 7th St.  Prior to officers arriving on scene, the parties involved in the fight separated.  One individual, identified as 33-year-old Robert Scott Jr of Des Moines sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound.  Scott Jr drove himself to a nearby fire station where he was treated and transported to an area hospital.  A second individual involved, identified as 33-year-old Christopher Bender of West Des Moines, remained at a residence on 7th St.

Police say Bender called police “wanting to explain what happened.”

Police made contact with Bender at his residence.  Bender was also transported to a hospital for injuries sustained during the fight.

Police reported that “Preliminary investigation shows that this is a family dispute and that Scott Jr and Bender are related by marriage.  The investigation is on-going to determine the full extent of the incident.  No charges have been filed at this time.”
